Navy Midshipmen 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (ACC) – Midshipmen

Under the guidance of seven-year head coach Ken Niumatalolo, the Midshipmen have made six bowl appearances in the past seven seasons. But after more than a century as an Independent, Navy will now contend for its first American Athletic Conference championship in its first season in the newly formed conference.

Team Strengths

Leading the way for Navy, will be returning superstar quarterback Keenan Reynolds, who will look to cap a tremendous college career with a strong finish in 2015.

The four-year starter is the spark plug for Navy’s triple-option offense and is an absolute beast on the ground, ranking first among quarterbacks in NCAA history with 64 rushing touchdowns.

Reynolds’s 21–11 record is extraordinary, but football is a team sport, and it would not be possible to build that kind of resume without a score of weapons like senior running backs Chris Swain and DeBrandon Sanders. Mix in a very capable wide receiver in Jamir Tillman, and Navy’s offense has enough options to keep any defense guessing.

Defensively, Navy will rely on a couple of key players, starting with junior cornerback Brendon Clements who has displayed an outstanding sense for the ball on his way to 107 career tackles and eight pass breakups.

He is flanked by corner Quincy Adams who started all 13 games last season, on his way to earning All-Independent honorable mention honors for finishing as Navy’s third-leading tackler in 2014.

Team Weaknesses

For starters, Navy will have to replace probably its best punter in program history in Pablo Beltran, who finished his college career ranked second in school history with a 41.8-yard average. Senior Gavin Jernigan will likely get the job.

Then there are the lines, starting with an offensive line that must go through a big rebuilding process this season after graduating three starters.

Same thing goes for the defensive line and the defense as a whole, which lost end Paul Quessenberry, linebackers Jordan Drake and Chris Johnson, and safety Parrish Gaines. A foursome that will not be easily replaced.

That’s because Navy’s 3-4 system requires the inside linebackers to make the majority of the tackles, and in 2015, three of the four linebackers will be first-time starters.

Navy Midshipmen 2015 Prediction (9-4)

The Midshipmen showed they were the real deal last season with a big win over Army and San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl. However, this season is going to be the start of a new era for Navy.

And although the team losses some key players from last year, it owns a 34–27–1 record against current AAC members.

They have also regularly played schools such as East Carolina and Tulane and with a veteran coach on the sideline, I expect the Midshipmen to contend for a conference championship, while beating rivals Army and Air Force to snatch the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy and qualify for a bowl game.
